The Rescue Story of A Stray Dog, Huan Huan

We discovered a stray Akita dog in the suburbs of Shanghai when walking in the spring rain. Before this encounter, we used to hold the belief that a purebred dog would less likely be abandoned since they are more expensive than others, but it seems that the breed is not necessarily relevant when people are determined to get rid of their pet dogs. Huan Huan, the homeless puppy we spotted on the street, was only about 10 months old and had been abandoned twice unfortunately. Her first owner gave her away because the owner’s landlord no longer allowed a pet. Before long, the second owner found himself having difficulty with the commitment due to his busy schedule, so he left her on the street.

When we first met Huan Huan, not surprisingly she was suffering from some skin problem, and her leg was injured. We picked her up from the street, since one of our volunteers happened to have experience with large dogs, he offered to provide her care and made his home her temporary shelter. Although abandoned twice, Huan Huan seemed to still retain trust in humans. She appeared to be lively, cute, and liked following people around. Dr. Yang, the founder of our animal rescue charity organization, named her Huan Huan, hoping the puppy would be happy and joyful forever, now that she’s saved. In the following few weeks, Huan Huan received proper treatment and was healed from her skin sickness and injury. As a great comfort to everyone, thankfully she’s also blessed to find a loving home during this time. The adopter who kindly adopted Huan Huan is a doctor who loves dogs, even though she already has a small Shiba Inu at home. Huan Huan’s new mom truly cares for her, who walked and played with her, took her out to trips so Huan Huan could make friends with other dogs. In just one month, we revisited Huan Huan. To our great astonishment, the once weak and thin puppy is now gorgeous, confident, and loves to be around people more than ever before. Certainly she also preserves the amusing dignity and cleverness that is unique to a pet dog!

It’s by no means an easy process to save a stray dog, but it’s totally worth it no matter how exhausting the work was to us. It’s such a relief and comfort each time when we see a fury child rescued could end up having a happy new life and no longer fear being homeless or put on someone’s dining table. For this alone, we felt that all the hard work paid off.
